The classic Sydney terrace house
The Sydney terrace house is the quintessential Australian home.
The Sydney Terrace House is a classic representation of Australian architecture. Typically three or four stories tall, these homes feature smooth brick walls, limited light access through the front and rear of the property, and a simple front verandah. With roots in the vernacular architecture of the 18th century, the Sydney Terrace House is not unlike the homes found in London or Paris during the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

Heritage
Many streets scenes in Australia's major cities still feature this style of working-class housing, particularly in the central business districts of Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, and Hobart. Over time, as people became more affluent, wrought iron and decorative screens became popular additions to these homes and are still in demand today.
When working with clients on a Terrace House renovation, one of the most common issues we encounter is a lack of natural light due to the absence of windows on one or both sides of the home. To address this, we often incorporate glass conservatories, skylights, glass atriums, and modern light fixtures to bring in more light. Another solution is to open up the staircase with floating timber or a combination of glass and floating steel, which can add to the design of the space, depending on your preference.
We also modernise these homes by designing contemporary bathrooms and kitchens, brightening the space with white walls, colorful artwork, and vibrant rugs.
